En ces temps incertains, pourquoi ne pas s’en remettre à des prophéties générées par une IA entrainée avec les écrits de Nostradamus ? C’est ce que propose Nostradamus.ai.
J’ai ici utilisé une version open-source de GPT-2, (dérivé du modèle proposé par Open AI), que j’ai entraîné avec un corpus de textes en français (romans et pièces de théatres) tombés dans le domaine public. J’ai ensuite affiné ce modèle en lui soumettant le texte des Prophéties de Nostradamus. La difficulté résidait dans la faible nombres de lignes dont dispose cet écrit (plus le texte est copieux, meilleur sera la qualité du modèle ainsi généré), et la syntaxe approximative des prophéties, mélange de vieux français à l’orthographe parfois aléatoire et d’Occitan, ce qui compliqua d’autant plus la phase d’apprentissage par la machine.
Les prophéties de Nostradamus ont longtemps intrigué les curieux, persuadés qu’il y avait là un code à percer, qui permettrait de décrypter le texte et d’accéder ainsi aux véritables sens des prédictions. Le testament que laissa Michel de Nostredame après sa mort, contenait ainsi de nombreuses occurrences numériques qui furent interprétés comme la clé permettant de percer le sens caché de ses écrits. En substituant des mots, en comptant les répétitions, le nombre de lettre, et en les comparant, on pourrait ainsi découvrir le vrai message enfoui dans ce fourbi textuel.
Attribuer des valeurs aux mots, les comparer, rechercher les occurrences, c’est le travail qui va être aussi effectué lorsque on utilise des réseaux de neurones artificielles pour entraîner une intelligence artificielle. Ainsi, en utilisant une méthode de décryptage assez lunaire, le quatrain I.35 est traduit de telle manière dans le livre Les prophéties de Nostradamus1:
Dix ordinateurs jumelés, liquide jusqu’à la gueule.
Ils morcellent pour calculer sans lier les unités.
Révèle du chaos un rêve nouveau, simple.
Il gère les lois pour mûrir les cubes purs.
Nostradamus aurait il prévu l’émergence du calcul partagé en ligne? Serait ce une invitation à passer ses écrits à la moulinette de l’IA afin d’en révéler leur véritable sens?
Le mathématicien et philosophe Allemand Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, par ailleurs inventeur d’une machine à calculer, expose en 1666 dans son essai De Arte Combinatoria, l’idée d'une machine nommée le Calculus ratiocinator. Cette machine à calculer restée à l’état théorique, précurseur en quelques sortes des algorithmes informatique, qui, en associant des valeurs numériques à des idées et des concepts (un peu comme des statistiques), aurait ainsi permis de résoudre des problèmes logiques ou métaphysiques, et de distinguer le vrai du faux. On rerouve cette volonté, comme avec l'alchimie ou avec l'intelligence artificielle, de retrouver une pureté originelle ou d'aboutir à une vérité ultime grace à un rituel technique.
De Nostradamus à Leibniz, jusqu’au générateur de texte d’Open AI, et en passant par les fermes de calcul en ligne de Google, il me semble que les textes de Nostradamus ont été conçu pour révéler leur véritable signification à la lumière des intelligences artificielles. Il suffit d’y croire. Un peu comme pour les IA...

On apprendra dans ce livre, entre autres prédictions fantaisistes, que les studios hollywoodiens vont disparaître en 1994, suite à un gigantesque tremblement de terre qui ravagera la Californie, (et non pas à cause des plateformes de streaming). Ou bien encore, que la première rencontre filmée avec des extra-terrestres, (rien que ça!) aura lieu en 1998. Quand à Margaret Thatcher, elle reprendra la tête du gouvernement anglais à la fin des années 90 (mais pas un mot sur la rencontre impromptue entre la princesse de Galles et un pilier de pont Parisien).
In these uncertain times, why not rely on prophecies generated by an AI trained with the writings of Nostradamus? This is what nostradamus.ai proposes.
I used an open-source version of GPT-2, by Open-ai, which I trained with a corpus of French texts (novels, plays...) that are in the public domain. I then refined this model by submitting to it the text of the Prophecies of Nostradamus. The difficulty lay in the small number of lines that this text offers (the more the text is copious, the better the quality of the model generated), and the approximate syntax of the text, a mixture of old French with sometimes random spelling and Occitan, which complicates even more the learning phase by the machine.
The prophecies of Nostradamus have long intrigued the curious, convinced that there was a code to be cracked, which would allow the text to be deciphered and thus access the true meaning of the predictions. The will that Michel de Nostre Dame left after his death contained numerous numerical occurrences that were interpreted as the key to deciphering the hidden meaning of his writings. By substituting words, counting repetitions, the number of letters, and comparing them, one could discover the true message buried in this textual jumble.
Assigning values to words, comparing them, and searching for occurrences, is the work that will also be done when using artificial neural networks to train artificial intelligence. Thus, using this rather far-fetched decoding method, the quatrain I.35 is translated in the book The prophecies of Nostradamus1:
Ten computers paired, liquid to the mouth.
They fragment to calculate without linking the units.
Reveals of the chaos a new dream, simple.
It manages the laws to mature the pure cubes.
Michel de Nostre Dame would it have foreseen the emergence of the calculation shared online? Would it be an invitation to pass his writings to the mill of the AI to reveal their true meaning?

From Nostradamus to Leibniz, to the text generator of Open AI, and passing by the online calculation farms of Google, it seems to me that the texts of Nostradamus were conceived to reveal their true meaning in the light of artificial intelligence. You just have to believe in them. A bit like for AIs...

Or that the first filmed encounter with aliens (just that!) will take place in 1998. As for Margaret Thatcher, she will take over the English government at the end of the 90s (but not a word about the impromptu meeting between the princess of Wales and a Parisian bridge pillar).
